Violence, Trauma, and Trauma Surgery

The chapter, “Girls and Trauma: Performing Socio-Surgery through a Gender Responsive Lens” was written in collaboration with Dr. Selwyn Rogers, Head of Trauma at the University of Chicago Medical Center, and Dr. Mark Siegler of the MacLean Center for Medical Ethics. The work was developed to speak to the socio-ecological breakdown within the urban context that has induced trauma and adverse child experiences among girls. The chapter introduces specialized gender-responsive strategies that are critical in addressing the felt needs of girls, reducing the effects of trauma, and restoring balance within socio-ecological systems through strength-based practices.
